Solidarity and service

Working together and helping others is obviously essential for the community. I also think that it is essential for one’s own sanity. When things get hard, the people who are dedicated to helping others have a better chance of keeping track or their humanity and the goodness of life, than those who are not. I was struck with this realization years ago while watching the movie “The Titanic.” The movie portrays some people risking their lives trying to rescue others, while a selfish, privileged guy shoves others aside in order to guarantee a spot for himself on a lifeboat. I decided that I would rather live a caring life, even if it is a bit shorter, than a selfish life.

It is good to ask ourselves now, “What can I offer others?” All of us have skills that can serve people around us, and as crises hit, there will be no shortage of people needing help. Most importantly, now is the time to make the decision not to go it alone, but to pull together in solidarity.
