Watch your mental diet

Once you start learning about the dimensions of the global crisis, it is very easy to become focused on the negative news and frightening predictions for the world. The Internet is especially notorious for this. One day, while researching Peak Oil, I clicked from one website to the next, each one seeming to present scarier scenarios for what is in store. Hours later, I realized that I was paralyzed with fear, stuck in my seat, and in no state to do anything useful. Later, I came up with this rule: For every exposure to frightening information or discouraging opinions, get twice as much exposure to things that are hopeful and inspiring. This could mean reading a good book or magazine (see the Resources page), or spending time with a child or a friend. (It’s also a good idea to bring a friend with you when the movie or lecture is apocalyptic!)
